The variety of rigging, the <strong>arrangement of the masts and the different sail shapes<\/strong> make each sailing ship unique and special for specific purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-9ba2b9f1\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-ec956ca5\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-ec956ca5\">\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-12630cab gb-headline-text\">What is a sailing ship?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><br>A sailing ship is propelled entirely or primarily <strong>by the force of the wind<\/strong> through its sails. Sailing ships have at least one mast and one sail, with <strong>two types of sails: square sails and fore-and-aft sails<\/strong>. Square sails are attached to a yard and are mainly oriented transversely to the direction of travel. What does that mean? What other <strong>types of sailing ships<\/strong> are there and what distinguishes the <strong>different types of ships<\/strong>? We have compiled a list of some types of sailing ships for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Sailing ships are distinguished by the <strong>arrangement of their masts<\/strong> and their <strong>sail equipment<\/strong>. The <strong>rigging<\/strong> is important for <strong>classifying a ship type<\/strong>. When classifying a ship type, other characteristics of the ship are also taken into account, mainly the <strong>design of the hull<\/strong>, which in turn determines the ship's intended use and possible sailing areas and often has a connection to the regional shipbuilding tradition at the time of construction. <strong>Sails come in different shapes<\/strong> and different methods are used to attach them to the masts of a sailing ship.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-bd0bdc0d\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-0a4cebbe\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-0a4cebbe\">\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-928549f6 gb-headline-text\">Full-rigged ship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><br>All masts are square-rigged. There are <strong>four- and five-masted full-rigged ships<\/strong>. The rear mast carries an additional gaff sail (mizzen sail) to assist with tacking and jibing manoeuvres. The <strong>four-masted barque<\/strong> has an additional fully rigged mast. Schooners were mainly used for courier services and as warships. In addition, there is a <strong>gaff sail (mizzen sail)<\/strong> on the main mast. Brigs were often used as merchant ships and training ships.
