Kiel Bight and the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei
Trip information
This is where you board
Eckernförde is idyllically situated on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. In the town harbour, you can take a stroll along the inviting harbour promenade, which is a popular attraction for guests and locals alike. The fine sandy, four-kilometre-long beach with its colourful beach chairs is only a few minutes' walk away.
Make the most of your stay by taking a leisurely stroll through the shopping streets in the immediate vicinity of the harbour area. The historic old town invites you to wander around its lovingly restored half-timbered houses, small boutiques and winding alleys. Particularly worth seeing is the 13th-century St. Nicolai Church, whose tower offers a wonderful view of the city and the sea.
Voyage description
Our crew welcomes you aboard in Eckernförde's city harbour. Boarding is at 7 PM. After a welcome drink and a shared dinner in the deck lounge, you will get to know your fellow travellers and soon feel at home on the decks of the Eye of the Wind.
Active or leisurely sailing – the choice is yours
Following a safety and sailing briefing from the friendly ship's crew, you are welcome to actively participate in the ship's operations yourself. Your active assistance on deck is always voluntary, so you can, of course, simply relax and watch the sailing manoeuvres and the traditional seamanship practised daily. As fresh sea air is known to make you hungry, look forward to our excellent onboard cuisine, which will surprise you every day with a variety of creations from the galley's cookbook.
Eckernförde Bay – Flensburg Fjord – Sønderborg (DK)
„Cast off!“ is the command soon after breakfast. During the day's sailing, we'll cross the invisible German-Danish maritime border and find a berth for the night in the protected harbour of Sønderborg on the island of Als. The main attraction is the castle with its park, which is within sight of our mooring. A stroll through the old town, with its typical Danish tranquility, and along the harbour front with its historic merchant houses, is well worth the effort.
From Sønderborg (DK) to Ærø or Langeland
After rounding the southern tip of the island of Als, we cross the Little Belt and set course for Marstal in the southeast of the Danish island of Ærø. The port town's fame as Denmark's centre for sailing ships is not exaggerated. In the years around the turn of the century, a fleet of over 300 merchant sailing ships was based here. The harbour is still a busy place today, with steel and wooden shipyards, engine factories and a ferry port. The sailors' houses are built close to the harbour. Between them, the narrow streets and alleys wind in charming disorder. On the harbour is the internationally renowned Maritime Museum, which houses over 200 ship models and other exhibits from all seven seas.
A plannable day's destination is the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei; the well-known green and white lighthouse marks the entrance to this arm of the sea. In the charming fishing village of Maasholm and in the port town of Kappeln, there are good opportunities for shore excursions. If the light conditions are good and the wave height permits, it will be possible to undertake a photo tour around the ship with the Eye of the Wind's dinghy in this area. From here, we will gradually set course for our destination port.
Before evening, we will decide on another shore excursion or, alternatively, another night at anchor off the west coast of Kiel Fjord. The highlight of the last sea day will then be our traditional Captain's Dinner. Time for you to enjoy the evening atmosphere on deck with a glass of wine from the onboard bar.
As this varied voyage draws to a close, we'll secure the lines in the harbour of Kiel-Holtenau. Here, you will bid farewell to our crew and fellow travellers. You'll disembark with a duffel bag full of memories. Take some time for a stroll along the quay to the lighthouse. Relaxing days in the Western Baltic Sea are now behind you. The journey will remain a fond memory thanks to the balanced mix of time spent sailing and leisurely shore excursions.
