50 years Eye of the Wind:
Anniversary-Trip, limited T-Shirt and Shanty
In the international maritime world, she has long been regarded as a ‘legend of the seas’: the Eye of the Wind has circumnavigated the globe, led the scientific expedition ‘Operation Drake’ under the patronage of Prince Charles (now King Charles III), taken part in tall ship regattas, and served as a backdrop and setting for Hollywood film productions. Fifty years ago, on 25 September 1976 to be precise, following several years of complete restoration, the sailing ship set out on its maiden voyage under its current name, Eye of the Wind, from the port town of Ramsgate on the English Channel coast, with stops in Australia and a rounding of the notorious Cape Horn.

Sailing enthusiasts had been so moved by the ship’s history that, in 1973, they began extensive conversion work to transform it into a brig. Its dreary existence as a cargo ship came to an end, and the two-masted vessel was henceforth ready, under its new name Eye of the Wind, to set sail for great adventures at sea.
A six-day anniversary trip starting and ending in Kiel / Germany in September 2026 pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the first voyage under the ship’s current name, Eye of the Wind. During the trip, we are going to explore the inlets of the Western Baltic Sea – the Kiel Fjord, Eckernförde Bay and the Schlei Baltic Sea fjord. Fellow travellers of all ages are welcome; no prior experience is required to take part in the trip.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the name, this exclusive anniversary T-shirt, limited to 50 copies, is available here in the Ship Shop and can be pre-ordered now in black or ash (grey) colour.
Print on the back: a ship’s silhouette within a circle of rope featuring a figure-of-eight knot as a symbol of infinity, the Eye of the Wind lettering, port and starboard anchors, and the anniversary years 1976–2026.
Print on the sleeve: stylised ship’s bell with the inscription “Where we go one – we go all”, in keeping with the engraving on the original ship’s bell of the Eye of the Wind.
A musical account of the ship’s maritime history, spanning over 100 years in total – and focusing in particular on the period since the ship was renamed the Eye of the Wind – can also be heard in the specially released shanty song “A Sailing Legend”.
Here are the chorus lyrics to sing along to:
Good times, rolling like the ocean,
Good times, breaking on the bow,
Raise your glass to the Eye of the Wind, boys,
She was sailing then, she is sailing now.
