Trip information

When the Eye of the Wind casts off from Oban, a sailing voyage begins that takes you from the serene beauty of the Scottish west coast to the bustling harbour of Belfast. On board our traditional sailing ship, you’ll experience the sea and its natural surroundings as your constant companions: the wind fills the sails, the water glistens in the shifting light, and on deck, the hustle and bustle of everyday life quickly fades from view.

Over the first few miles, the foothills of the Scottish Highlands set the tone for this journey. Their striking landscapes provide a magnificent backdrop as the ship glides through the waters between the islands and the mainland. Anyone who wishes can learn more about sails, rigging, navigation, meteorology and life on board under the guidance of the crew – or simply sit on deck and gaze out at the horizon.

The route takes you through the Southern Hebrides to Belfast Lough – an archipelago where sweeping views alternate with sheltered anchorages. As you sail past the islands of Islay and Jura, the view opens up to reveal rugged coastlines, green slopes and small villages deeply rooted in maritime life. With a bit of luck, you might spot seabirds skimming the waves or seals resting on the rocky shores. Each day follows its own rhythm: sometimes the focus is on sailing, whilst at other times there’s time to explore a harbour or bay in more detail.

Further south, the scenery changes. The coast of Northern Ireland welcomes the Eye of the Wind with new views and an exciting blend of rugged natural beauty and maritime history. Finally, the route leads into Belfast Lough. The arrival in Belfast marks a special conclusion: after days at sea, a city awaits whose past and present are closely linked to shipbuilding and the sea.

A sailing trip full of wide open spaces, wind and island moments – and an extraordinary way to travel from Oban to Belfast.

Oban

The railway and steamship once made this Victorian harbour town the ‘gateway to the Hebrides’. A visit to the whisky distillery is well worth it. At the ‘Oban Inn’, people are already drinking and singing by lunchtime. Perched above the town stands a replica of the Roman Colosseum – a rather curious landmark for the town.

Oban is a pretty harbour town on the Scottish mainland. The lively harbour district is a great place to watch ferries, fishing boats and excursion boats. Crossings to Mull, Kerrera and Lismore depart from here; boat trips also take you along the coast and to the islands, where, with a bit of luck, you can spot seals and seabirds. One of the town’s landmarks is McCaig’s Tower: this unusual circular structure on a hill is reminiscent of a Roman amphitheatre and offers sweeping views across the harbour and bay. Also worth seeing are the ruins of Dunollie Castle, north of the town centre. In the harbour, restaurants tempt visitors with fresh fish and seafood.
Oban combines a maritime atmosphere with impressive views and is an ideal starting point for exploring Scotland’s west coast.

Belfast

Guestbook comments

I’m absolutely thrilled with this sailing trip (it was my first of its kind) and am still basking in the many memories, the excellent crew, who were always so friendly, and, of course, the experience of seeing how it’s still possible to travel on a historic sailing ship today.
