Trip information

On this sailing trip, you will experience the Baltic States from the deck of a sailing ship: the summery Baltic Sea, quiet bays, lively harbour towns and lots of history. You can actively participate in the sailing manoeuvres or simply enjoy the wind and the vastness of the ocean. In the evenings, we moor in sheltered anchorages or small harbours and end the day watching the sun set over the Baltic Sea – always close to nature and culture. The sailing trip is framed by two attractive and easily accessible harbours: Tallinn in Estonia and Riga in Latvia.

This is where you board

Tallinn

Located directly on the Baltic Sea, Tallinn offers medieval flair and maritime heritage. The UNESCO-protected Old Town with its Raekoja plats and narrow streets is ideal for a stroll. In the harbour area, the Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour attracts visitors with historic ships, submarines and interactive exhibitions.

Tallinn, Estonia's capital on the Baltic Sea, combines well-preserved medieval architecture with a modern metropolis. The old town, surrounded by city walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can be easily explored on foot. Raekoja plats is home to the Gothic town hall and narrow streets lined with merchants' houses and warehouses that bear witness to the Hanseatic era. A short climb leads up to Toompea Hill with its Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St. Mary's Cathedral. The viewpoints offer panoramic views over the red roofs and the harbour. Also worth seeing are the historic city walls with defensive towers such as the "Long Hermann" and the Rotermann entertainment district, where old industrial buildings now house design shops, restaurants and galleries.

Voyage description

Our crew welcomes you aboard in the port of Tallinn. Boarding will commence at 7 p.m., and during a subsequent shared dinner, you will have the opportunity to get to know the crew members and your fellow travellers in a relaxed setting. You will feel right at home in the comfortable saloons and on the deck planks of the Eye of the Wind.

You can easily reach Tallinn with a direct flight from many international airports or by ferry across the Baltic Sea – your getaway begins with the journey itself.

Our sailing area: along the Baltic coast to Latvia

Before long, we leave the medieval silhouette of Tallinn astern: pointed church spires, the city walls, and the modern harbour form the backdrop for our first nautical miles. We pass offshore islets and sandy beaches, as the city's buildings slowly disappear beyond the horizon. As soon as there is enough room, we set sail – the quiet creaking of the rigging, the movement of the wind in the sails, and the steady rush of the Baltic waves set the tone for our journey along the Baltic coast.

Heading south-west, the vastness of the eastern Baltic Sea opens up. Gentle swells, a wide horizon, and the clear Baltic air characterise this stretch. Along the Estonian and Latvian coast, flat beach landscapes, dunes and wooded areas alternate. Depending on the route and weather conditions, we pass isolated coastal sections, with the occasional lighthouse, fishing village or cargo ship appearing in the distance. On deck, you have time to let your thoughts wander, read a book, or simply watch the play of light and clouds in the sky as everyday life fades into the distance.

Would you prefer to sail along comfortably or actively? – The choice is yours!

Following a safety and sailing briefing by the friendly ship's crew, you are warmly invited to help with the sailing maneuvers. Under expert guidance, you will assist with setting, lowering, and trimming the sails, take a turn at the helm, or help with traditional seamanship. Everything is voluntary – those who wish can relax and observe shipboard life from the railing or the saloon, enjoying the journey in the rhythm of wind and waves.

Summer-fresh sea air makes you hungry – look forward to our excellent onboard cuisine, which surprises you daily with a variety of creations. Stimulating conversations over an extended breakfast, lunch on deck, or dinner in the lounge are among the most beautiful moments of daily life on board.

Summer on the Baltic Sea, islands and Hanseatic city charm in Riga

On our journey to the destination port, we will experience the Baltic Sea in its natural state. Depending on the weather and the planned itinerary, there's an opportunity to stop at a smaller harbour or anchorage. This will allow time for a walk on the beach, a dip in the Baltic Sea, or a stroll through a tranquil coastal town with wooden houses, small cafés, and perhaps a market offering regional specialities. With a bit of luck, we will experience long, bright evenings when the sea glows in warm colours and the sun sets late.

Weather permitting, a night at anchor at sea can also be scheduled during the trip. The view across the glassy water surface and perhaps a drink from the onboard bar make this night „in the middle of the ocean“ an unforgettable experience. And the subsequent breakfast on deck, with a view of water and sky, tastes even better than in port.

Finally, the Latvian coast appears on the horizon, and we approach the mouth of the Daugava. The entrance to Riga leads past port facilities, beaches and green riverside areas, until gradually the silhouette of the Latvian capital appears: church towers, warehouses and modern bridges.

Riga combines Hanseatic heritage with vibrant city culture: Art Nouveau facades, Old Town alleyways, market halls, and riverside promenades await your discovery. After disembarking, you'll have the opportunity to extend your stay individually – perhaps with a stroll through the historic Old Town, a visit to one of the numerous cafés, or a wander along the Daugava. Your Baltic coast sailing trip ends entirely at your own pace.

This is where you disembark

Riga

At the mouth of the Daugava into the Baltic Sea, Riga shows its maritime side. A short visit takes you to the passenger harbour, from where ferries depart for Scandinavia, and to the modern National Library, which is impressively reflected on the banks of the river. The Latvian Maritime Museum in the old fortress presents maritime history.

Riga, the capital of Latvia, lies on the Daugava River and is the cultural centre of the Baltic region. The city was founded in 1201 and was a member of the Hanseatic League, which is reflected in its merchant houses and warehouses. The focus of a short visit is the Old Town (Vecrīga) with its narrow streets, Riga Cathedral and St. Peter's Church, from whose tower you have a panoramic view of the city. The Three Brothers, the oldest preserved residential ensemble in Riga, are famous. The colourful House of the Blackheads and the Town Hall catch the eye on Town Hall Square. North of the Old Town, the Art Nouveau quarter around Alberta iela is one of the most important ensembles of this architectural style in the world. A walk in Basteiberg Park along the city canal offers relaxation.

Guestbook comments

I can only recommend a sailing trip on the Eye of the Wind. This two-master is a sailing ship straight out of a picture book, and the crew is in a great mood. And if you want, you can climb to the top of the mast - 27 metres above sea level. Fabulous!“

It was a fabulous week. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Seeing this magnificent sailing ship glide through the waves powered only by the wind is an indescribable feeling. There is nothing more beautiful.
