Many routes lead from the Kattegat to Eckernförde Bay. On this early summer sailing trip, the Baltic Sea becomes our "playground" of numerous possibilities. On our way south, we could choose to sail through the Öresund – with a stopover in Copenhagen and a trip past the chalk cliffs of the island of Møn on the itinerary. If we decide to pass through the Great Belt, we will enjoy long stretches under sail and plenty of time at sea. Here, too, shore leave, for example in the port city of Svendborg, provides variety. Or would you prefer a slower and more leisurely pace? Then the Little Belt with coastal towns such as Middelfart or Sønderborg would be the right choice. In any case, this voyage is characterised by a balanced ratio of sailing time at sea and sufficient time for varied port visits and shore excursions.

Trip information
This is where you board
Gothenburg in the summer province of Bohuslän: the western Swedish archipelago is considered perhaps the most beautiful sea area in the Baltic Sea. The city centre of Sweden's second largest city is easy to explore on foot; numerous coffee houses invite you to linger and watch the world go by. For those interested in maritime history, it is also worth visiting the four-masted barque Viking, built in 1906; this largest windjammer built in Scandinavia is now a museum ship in the Lilla Bommen section of the harbour.
Incidentally, the hull of the Eye of the Wind lay in a shipyard in Gothenburg for a year from 1970 onwards. Some time later, work began here to convert it into the passenger ship it is today, thus giving the tall ship a "second life".
Voyage description
Our crew will welcome you on board in the harbour of Gothenburg. You can get there by direct flight from many international airports. Embarkation takes place at 7 pm. Afterwards, you will quickly feel at home on the deck of the Eye of the Wind and get to know your fellow travellers over dinner in the cosy saloon.
Our sailing area: across the Kattegat through the world of the Belts to Eckernförde Bay
Accompanied by container ships, ferries and yachts, our windjammer sails out of Gothenburg and into the Baltic Sea. Lighthouses, stone markers and the typical reddish-brown-grey rocky terrain of the archipelago stand out on the horizon before our bow. Various granite formations, small islands and heaps of stones lie scattered in the water at random intervals, forcing the smaller motorboats around us to weave through the watery landscape. Soon, the open Kattegat lies before us.
Would you like to take the helm yourself now and keep the ship on the right course? You can actively participate in sailing, operate the ropes, set the sails, and even climb up the mast – always on a voluntary basis and under the guidance of our professional crew, of course. All sailing manoeuvres are taught with great enthusiasm for participation. As fresh sea air is known to make you hungry, look forward to our excellent onboard cuisine, which will surprise you every day with varied creations from the galley's cookbook and local specialities.
Under favourable weather conditions, we will have the opportunity to bypass a port in the evening and spend the night at anchor – a highlight of any sea voyage! Opportunities for shore excursions exist in numerous ports along our route, for example in ...
- Aarhus: There is plenty to discover in the university city of Aarhus, which is characterised by Nordic flair and a lively past: The typical Danish city centre is characterised by well-preserved half-timbered architecture. A visit to St Mary's Church, the cathedral or the open-air museum „Den Gamle By“ is well worthwhile – here you have the impression of actually being in the merchant era of medieval Aarhus.
- Ebeltoft: The historic town centre has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The world's smallest town hall („Det Gamle Rådhus“) with an old prison cellar, a Romanesque-early Gothic church, a glass museum and old bourgeois and merchants' houses define the idyllic flair of the harbour town on the Danish western shore of the Kattegat.
- Svendborg: Passing under the majestic „Storebæltsbroen“ over the Great Belt – at nearly 2,700 metres long, Europe's largest suspension bridge – is a special experience at any time of day or night. From here, we reach the port of Svendborg, which opens up like a gateway to the South Funen Archipelago. Ferries sail out to the islands from here, and numerous yachts create a lively atmosphere on the water.
A pre-planned daily destination is the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei; the well-known green and white lighthouse marks the entrance to this arm of the sea. If the light conditions are good and the wave height permits, it will be possible to take a photo tour around the ship with the Eye of the Wind's dinghy in this area. From here, we will gradually head towards Eckernförde Bay. The evening's „Captain's Dinner“ will then be another highlight of the second-to-last day of this sailing trip!
Disembarkation at Eckernförde's city harbour is scheduled for 10 AM.
This is where you disembark
Eckernförde is idyllically situated on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. In the town harbour, you can take a stroll along the inviting harbour promenade, which is a popular attraction for guests and locals alike. The fine sandy, four-kilometre-long beach with its colourful beach chairs is only a few minutes' walk away.
Make the most of your stay by taking a leisurely stroll through the shopping streets in the immediate vicinity of the harbour area. The historic old town invites you to wander around its lovingly restored half-timbered houses, small boutiques and winding alleys. Particularly worth seeing is the 13th-century St. Nicolai Church, whose tower offers a wonderful view of the city and the sea.
