Trip information

The starting point for the trip is Copenhagen. Before boarding, discover the sights between Nyhavn and the Royal Palace. On this week-long sailing trip along the 12th degree of longitude, we will explore the scenic coastline of the island of Zealand and the western Swedish archipelago. This area between Denmark and Sweden is considered by Scandinavia enthusiasts to be one of the most beautiful areas in the Baltic Sea. The sailing trip ends in the northern metropolis of Gothenburg. There, we plan to sail a short distance inland on the Trollhätte Canal and turn back after about a day's journey. Enjoy relaxing days on board – no previous experience is required to travel on the windjammer.

The itinerary provides for arrival in Gothenburg on Thursday evening (15 October) or Friday morning (16 October). This way you have a full day to explore the sights of the city, without having to book an additional night in a hotel.

Copenhagen

The colourful and lively promenade in Nyhavn (New Harbour) with its numerous restaurants and pubs is a major attraction in the evenings. If you want to get an overview, book a guided tour of the 100 metre high town hall tower – from there you can enjoy a view of the city from an elevated position.

Use the time during your stay to explore this Scandinavian metropolis. As we enter the harbour, we are greeted by the world-famous sculpture of the Little Mermaid. For more than 100 years, Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale character has been perched on her rock by the Kastellet, a former city fortification. In the Tivoli amusement park you will find merry-go-rounds, a Ferris wheel, many restaurants, an open-air theatre and a concert hall. It almost seems as if time has stood still here, which also makes it a favourite destination for locals. Copenhagen's new main attraction is „Den Blå Planet“ (The blue planet). The special thing about Europe's largest aquarium: In the building, visitors are „under water“ to observe exotic marine animals up close.

Voyage description

Embarkation in Copenhagen takes place at 7 pm. Afterwards, you will quickly feel at home on the deck planks of the Eye of the Wind and get to know your fellow travellers and the friendly crew over dinner in the cosy saloon.

Our sailing area: Øresund, Kattegat, Swedish archipelago and Götä älv

As a general rule, the captain usually decides which harbour or anchorage to call at on the same day, depending on the wind and weather conditions. Look forward to wonderful sailing days on the fresh autumn Baltic Sea. You can take an active part in sailing on a voluntary basis – our experienced crew will be happy to show you every nautical move with a lot of fun. Or make yourself comfortable below deck in the cosy saloon, browse through a good book from the on-board library or take a look at the range of DVDs on offer.

After a beautiful day sailing on the Kattegat, we reach the harbour town of Halmstad, which is also known as the „town with three hearts“ after the symbols on its coat of arms. Situated on the River Nissan, the town has numerous parks and green spaces to offer; just outside the town centre, beaches stretch along the coast for ten kilometres. The Picasso sculpture „Women's Head“ is just as much a landmark of the city as the historic three-masted barque „Najaden“, which is moored in the harbour as a museum ship.

We cruise through the grey-blue waters of the Kattegat bay. Before entering the port of Gothenburg we have to master the nautically challenging passage through the archipelago – small and tiny rocky islands are scattered here and within easy reach of the approach line to the city centre. Experienced sailors and Scandinavia enthusiasts consider the area of the western Swedish archipelago to be perhaps the most beautiful sea area in the Baltic Sea. This „maritime adventure playground“ off the coast of the Swedish provinces of Västergötland and Bohuslän is diverse in terms of landscape, well protected and at times fairytale-like and dreamy.

Before the end of the journey, we want to sail on the Götä älv river, which forms a navigable connection between the Kattegat and Lake Vänern as the Trollhätte Canal. At this time of year, the journey close to the shore is uniquely attractive.

Pleasant sailing close to the coast makes this offer ideal for beginners, too. This varied voyage is characterised by a good balance between sailing time at sea, shore leave in the harbour and a period of motoring on the Trollhätte Canal.

Gothenburg

Gothenburg impresses with its maritime flair, high-quality museums and green parks. The Lilla Bommen district, known for the striking „Läppstiftet“ skyscraper at the harbour, is particularly worth seeing. Excursion boats leave from here, and the Gothenburg Opera House is located in the immediate vicinity and invites you to enjoy culture.

Gothenburg is the ideal starting point for a cruise through the world of western Swedish archipelago. The area is considered to be perhaps the most beautiful sea area in the Baltic Sea: scenically diverse, well protected, visually unique and appealing and sometimes fairytale-like and dreamy. The City centre of Sweden's second largest city can be easily explored on foot; numerous coffee houses invite you to linger and watch the world go by. For those interested in the maritime world, it is also worth paying a visit to the the four-masted barque Viking, which is open to the public as a museum ship. Incidentally, the hull of our Eye of the Wind was stored in a shipyard in Gothenburg for a year from 1970, and it was here that the conversion work to the passenger ship in its present form began some time later, and thus the tall ship's „second life“.

Notes on the itinerary

The route described here may change at short notice due to the prevailing wind and weather conditions and in particular due to any closures of canals, locks or bridges. The ship's command will decide on stopovers and the course of the journey – whenever possible – taking your wishes into account. In this way, you will experience the cruise as a pleasant mixture of adventure and comfort, of participation and enjoyment.

Guestbook comments

I can highly recommend a sailing trip on the Eye of the Wind. This is a sailing ship straight out of a picture book, and the crew is in a great mood. You may climb to the top of the mast – 27 metres above sea level. Fabulous!"

It was a fabulous week. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Seeing this magnificent sailing ship glide through the waves powered only by the wind is an indescribable feeling. There is nothing more beautiful.
