Leeward Islands Discovery Trip
Trip information
This is where you board
The former British colony is famous for its 365 dream beaches – one beach for every day of the year. After its discovery by Christopher Columbus, British colonial rule shaped the island's image. Make the most of your stay by visiting English Harbourtown with its impeccably restored architecture. The accessible and absolutely worth seeing ruins of the fort bear witness to colonial efforts to protect against invasions from the sea.
In the centre of the island's capital, St. John's, narrow streets and markets invite you to stroll around. You can shop duty-free in the Heritage and Redcliffe Quay shopping centres. Don't miss out on a visit to one of the rum distilleries – some of the rums on offer are considered to be among the most remarkable creations in the world.
Voyage description
Our friendly crew welcomes you aboard at Falmouth Harbour, a natural harbour located on the southern coast of the sugar cane island of Antigua. At Pigeon Point, at the mouth of the harbour bay, there is a public sandy beach that attracts water sports enthusiasts, sun worshippers and beach walkers alike. A relaxing evening stroll ends here with a beautiful sunset behind the hills of the island's national parks.
Boarding takes place at 7 p.m. During the subsequent dinner together in the cosy saloon, you will quickly feel at home on the decks of the Eye of the Wind, get to know your fellow travellers and learn more details about the itinerary.
The international airport can be reached from many cities with one or two stopovers. Do you still have time before boarding? – From Antigua, you can take a helicopter tour to the active volcano on the neighbouring island of Montserrat.
Our sailing area: The Windward Islands
We sail in the Caribbean Sea on a north-westerly course towards Saint Martin. You will get to know the Eye of the Wind as a seaworthy and reliable ship that has proven itself in all weather conditions. After a safety and sailing briefing by the ship's crew, you will soon be able to participate in sailing operations yourself on a voluntary basis – no previous experience is necessary. Or you can simply make yourself comfortable on deck and watch in a relaxed manner.
Island hopping, anchorages, shore leave
Several stops are planned during the trip – either in harbours or at anchor in sheltered bays. Where we go ashore depends on the wind and weather conditions and will be decided at short notice by the captain, taking your wishes into account whenever possible. This way, you will experience the trip as a pleasant mix of adventure and comfort, of participation and enjoyment. Possible stops for shore leave include Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Saint Kitts and Nevis
More than a quarter of the island's surface area is designated as a protected national park. Island tours take you to the botanical garden, the old sugar cane factory or the impressive island church dating from 1856. From the lively party beach at Frigate Bay to the hidden gem of Banana Bay with its backdrop of coconut palms against azure blue water, all the bathing bays can be reached quickly by boat and offer us safe anchorages.
Barbuda has the longest beach in the Caribbean
This "treasure chest of glittering sand and emerald green sea" is home to a huge colony of frigate birds. The Dark Cave and Darby's Cave are well worth seeing – deep earth craters covered in rainforest, where you might expect to find hidden pirate treasure. Pink beaches invite you to snorkel and take long walks. The charm of this small island, combined with the friendliness and openness of its inhabitants, truly evokes a feeling of "heaven and back in a single day".
Many nautical miles later, the Caribbean island of Saint Martin appears on the horizon. The modern marina of Marigot in the French part of the island is our mooring point.
This is where you disembark
Princess Juliana International Airport is located in the Dutch southern half of the twin island Sint Maarten / Saint-Martin. A special feature of this Caribbean island paradise worth seeing can be found in the immediate vicinity: At the nearby Maho Beach the distance between the landing aircraft and the heads of the beach visitors (or the mastheads of the boats anchored there) is often only a few metres. The arrival times of the largest scheduled jets are announced daily on a chalkboard attached to a surfboard for amateur photographers. Between the airport and the nearby town of Marigot taxis or minibuses are available. The modern Fort Louis Marina lies in the French part of the colourful and lively Caribbean islandwhere the Euro is the official national currency.
