Trip information

On this four-day taster trip on the Baltic Sea, you will experience authentic traditional seamanship, enjoy the comfort on board and the excellent cuisine, and explore various coastal towns during shore leave after eventful days at sea. From Flensburg harbour, we will sail through the fjord and into the western Baltic Sea. We will remain almost within sight of the coastline: one possible destination is the scenic Baltic Sea fjord Schlei with the cosy harbour towns of Maasholm and Kappeln. The destination of this trip is the Tiessenkai in Kiel-Holtenau, located on the western shore of the Kiel Fjord.

Flensburg

Flensburg impresses with its maritime flair and Nordic charm. Worth seeing are the historic harbour, the picturesque old town with its merchants' courtyards, the Maritime Museum and St. Nikolai's Church. Cosy cafés and promenades along the fjord invite you to linger.

A unique water landscape unfolds between the Flensburg Fjord, the narrow Als Fjord and the Little Belt. Flensburg is the ideal starting point for exploring this area. The historic seafaring and port city is considered the home of rum and West Indian trade. Here, surrounded by romantic captains' and merchants' courtyards, you can follow in the footsteps of adventure, the smell of salt and tar. In the 18th century, ships brought raw rum to the city from the Caribbean – the many sailors' shanties about the famous "bottle of Rum" still bear witness to this today.
Our tip: take part in one of the guided tours of the city. The Maritime Museum offers fascinating insights into the city's maritime past, and the imposing St. Nikolai Church dominates the cityscape.

Voyage description

Our crew will welcome you on board in Flensburg harbour. Embarkation takes place at 7 pm. You will get to know your fellow travellers over a welcome drink followed by dinner together in the cosy saloon and will soon find your way around the deck planks of the Eye of the Wind and into your cabin.

Our sailing area: Flensburg Fjord, Danish South Sea and Kiel Fjord

After breakfast, it's „Cast off!“ During this first day of sailing, we cross the invisible German-Danish sea border. The water landscape in this area is repeatedly interrupted by small and large islands, stretches of beach and green forests. A possible first stop on our journey is Sønderborg on the island of Als. The main attraction is the castle with its park, which is within sight of our mooring. It is also worth taking a stroll through the old town with its typical Danish tranquillity and along the harbour with its historic merchants' houses.

Active or leisurely sailing – the choice is yours

After a safety and sailing briefing from the ship's crew, you can actively participate in the ship's operations yourself. Active assistance on deck is always on a voluntary basis, so you can of course also simply watch the sailing manoeuvres and the daily practice of traditional seamanship in a relaxed manner. The fresh sea air is known to make you hungry – so you can look forward to our excellent galley, which will surprise you every day with varied creations from the galley cookery book.

Possible destination for the day: Kappeln on the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei

Fresh sailing winds gradually push us southwards off Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic coast. A possible destination for the day is the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei; the well-known green and white lighthouse marks the entrance to this inlet. If the light conditions are good and the wave height allows, it will be possible to take a photo tour around the ship in this area with the Eye of the Wind's dinghy. The beautiful harbour town of Kappeln offers a good opportunity to go ashore. An alternative and attractive voyage option is a night in a sheltered anchorage – there we can enjoy the view of the mainland and the special evening atmosphere on deck with a drink from the on-board bar.

End of the trip with Captain's Dinner

Once more wind in the sails off Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic coast ... and then the highlight of the last day at sea: our traditional Captain's Dinner. At the end of this varied voyage, we will tie up the lines in the harbour of Kiel-Holtenau. Here you will say goodbye to our crew and your fellow travellers. You will disembark with a duffel bag full of memories. A relaxing week in the Western Baltic Sea now lies behind you. The voyage will remain in your memory thanks to the good balance of time under sail and relaxing shore excursions.

This is where you disembark

Kiel

Experience the impressive Kiel Canal with a view of the locks and enjoy walks by the water. Discover the lighthouse monument where Kaiser Wilhelm II once opened the canal. Relax in the café with a view of the passing ships.

In Holtenau, on the western shore of the Kiel Fjord, the Tiessenkai complex is a maritime attraction and focal point. Here you have the opportunity to watch the varied comings and goings in front of the locks of the Kiel Canal. From small sports yachts to ocean giants, watercraft of all types and sizes pass by us during the day on the world's busiest artificial waterway. On a walk to the small Holtenau lighthouse, you can soak up the nostalgic harbour atmosphere – old cargo sailors and schooners are often moored here at the quay.
Make the most of your stay by exploring the Kiel Fjord, spending a day at Falckenstein beach or taking a trip into the world of sailing at the Olympic harbour in Schilksee or the marina in Strande.

Notes on the itinerary

Guestbook comments

I can only recommend a sailing trip on the Eye of the Wind. This two-master is a sailing ship straight out of a picture book, and the crew is in a great mood. And if you want, you can climb to the top of the mast - 27 metres above sea level. Fabulous!“

Claus-Georg Petri
Fellow sailor and journalist, about his cruise in the South Funen Archipelago

Simply an overwhelming experience - you have to experience it.

Dr Hermann Gärlich
fellow sailor, about his voyage between Vigo and Tenerife

Here I can let go of all the tension and find myself again.

Jan Störmer

Seeing this magnificent sailing ship glide through the waves powered only by the wind is an indescribable feeling. There is nothing more beautiful.
