The Western Swedish Archipelago
Trip information
This is where you board
Gothenburg in the summer province of Bohuslän: the western Swedish archipelago is considered perhaps the most beautiful sea area in the Baltic Sea. The city centre of Sweden's second largest city is easy to explore on foot; numerous coffee houses invite you to linger and watch the world go by. For those interested in maritime history, it is also worth visiting the four-masted barque Viking, built in 1906; this largest windjammer built in Scandinavia is now a museum ship in the Lilla Bommen section of the harbour.
Incidentally, the hull of the Eye of the Wind lay in a shipyard in Gothenburg for a year from 1970 onwards. Some time later, work began here to convert it into the passenger ship it is today, thus giving the tall ship a "second life".
Voyage description
Our crew will welcome you on board in the harbour of Gothenburg. You can get there by direct flight from many international airports. Embarkation takes place at 7 pm. Afterwards, you will quickly feel at home on the deck of the Eye of the Wind and get to know your fellow travellers over dinner in the cosy saloon.
Our sailing area: through Kattegat and Skagerrak to Marstrand
In a stream of container freighters, ferries and yachts, our windjammer pushes through the fairway from Gothenburg out into the Baltic Sea. Lighthouses, stone beacons and the typical brown-red-grey rocks of the archipelago stand out on the horizon in front of the ship's bow. Various granite formations, small islands and piles of stones lie at random distances from each other in the water, forcing the smaller motorboats around us to zigzag through the wet landscape.
After a varied day of sailing, we look for a sheltered anchorage. The choice of suitable spots is huge – nowhere else in the world are there more islands and bays per square nautical mile. In the evening hours, it is worth taking the dinghy out and heading for one of the smaller rocky islands – the granite rock stores the warmth of the day; from here we can enjoy the evening atmosphere over the sea in peace and seclusion. The view from an elevated rock over the barren landscape with its scattered wooden houses in the typical colours of oxblood red and yellow is simply breathtaking.
In the midst of nature, the view sweeps over waves, islands, arches, bays, mountains and mossy rocks. Just a few nautical miles further north, the landscape changes. Green, partly wooded islands line the bends of the fairway here. In the summer months, only moderate swell is to be expected in this area, so that a calm journey awaits. The destination of the day's stage is the harbour of Marstrand on the islands of Marstrandsö and Koö in the Skagerrak. The Carlsten Fortress, which towers over the car-free town, can be seen from afar.
A detour to Sweden's only fjord, Gullmaren
We sail around the islands of Tjörn and Orust in the north and enter Gullmaren, Sweden's only fjord, at Lysekil. The „Gullmarsfjorden“ cuts around 30 kilometres inland. Here in the heart of the Bohuslän region, we inevitably feel transported into the world of Astrid Lindgren's Bullerbü. Many hours of sunshine and pleasant air and water temperatures make the region a popular holiday destination.
We continue cruising through the idyllic archipelago and enjoy the days at sea. The fresh sea air is known to make you hungry – so you can look forward to our excellent galley, which will surprise you every day with varied creations from the galley cookbook and local specialities. Enjoy the tranquillity of nature or make yourself comfortable on deck with a good book from the extensive on-board library.
Through the archipelago back to Gothenburg
On the way back to Gothenburg, we make another stopover in Mollösund harbour or look for an anchorage on the south side of Klaverön island. From the deck, perhaps with a glass of good wine, we watch the lively hustle and bustle of the yachts arriving late. You can't expect much more from a successful day on holiday. After an eventful week at sea, we reach the harbour of departure. One last look at the small and tiny rocky islands, which are scattered along our route and within easy reach. Our ship, the crew and the rural-maritime idyll of the historic province of Bohuslän will certainly leave you with fond memories.
