A voyage of discovery of the Mediterranean & the Atlantic
From the Costa del Sol through the Strait of Gibraltar and along the coast of Morocco to Tenerife
Malaga on the Costa del Sol. The Strait of Gibraltar. The wide open seas of the North Atlantic. Legendary Casablanca! Eleven extraordinary days packed with cultural discoveries and experiences of wild nature are on the sailing itinerary. "Welcome aboard" a trip with Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and maritime experiences as we set sail for Tenerife, the "island of the eternal spring".
Please note the following about the itinerary described:
The route we will sail will depend on the prevailing wind and weather conditions and may change at short notice if necessary. The captain often decides the course of each day's sailing, in particular the choice of a reachable harbour or anchorage for the night, on that day and will, whenever possible, of course try to take into account your wishes. This ensures that your sailing trip will be a pleasant mix of adventure and comfort, participation and simple enjoyment.
Embarkation in Malaga
The starting point of this trip is Malaga, Andalusia's second largest city, which has an international airport connected by direct flights to many countries. Even at the end of October, we can still expect mild temperatures and sunny days here. This stretch of coast definitely deserves to be known as Costa del Sol, the 'sun coast'. Use your time before embarking to visit the Alcazaba, an eleventh-century Moorish fortress, the Cathedral de la Encarnación, and the house where the great painter Pablo Picasso was born.
Sailing with the whales and dolphins through the Strait of Gibraltar
After a safety briefing, you'll soon hear the order "Ready to set sail!" and we'll be on our way to the sea. Each day will be unique: encounters with whales and dolphins are common in this part of the Mediterranean because the strong current from the Atlantic Ocean creates an abundant fish population. During the trip, you can of course join in operating the sails if you want —no experience is necessary. But even if you don't want to start pulling on the ropes yourself and would prefer to enjoy the trip on the deck or in the comfortable lounge, setting and trimming the sails is always a fascinating show of skill going back to a long-past seafaring era.
The reward for all true sailors: shore leave!
Several stopovers in harbours are planned over the course of this trip. You can choose from several attractive options, such as...
● Gibraltar – the "Monkey Rock" with views of Africa
Gibraltar is unique in several respects. Politically, it is considered a British overseas territory, although it is situated off the European mainland and can be seen as geographically part of Spain. The Rock of Gibraltar is a must-see for visitors—the cable car will take you up to a height of about 450 metres. From up there you'll have a spectacular view over the Bay of Algeciras and the continent of Africa, which is visible just on the horizon. You can also have an animal encounter with the Barbary macaques, a species of ape that live in a colony here on the mountain. The southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula is the only place in Europe where monkeys roam freely.
● Casablanca – the most western city of the Middle East
The former pirate stronghold is now the largest city in Morocco. The main attraction for tourists is the Hassan II Mosque, whose minaret is the tallest religious structure in the world with a height of 210 metres. Casablanca reinvents itself every day and the legendary hustle and bustle of the city on the Atlantic coast will capture any visitor under its spell. The unique mixture of honey pastries and mint tea, hamburgers and Coca-Cola makes the Moroccan metropolis the most Western city of the Middle East. By the way: "Casablanca", the classic film with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, was filmed entirely in Hollywood. Our tip for film fans: on the edge of the city centre you’ll find a replica of "Rick's Café" that’s true to the original, where the backdrop of the political thriller comes to life and guests are swept away to the atmosphere of the 1940s in true period style.
Casablanca means "white house". Buildings like this one are typical for the city (image courtesy of Regional Council of Tourism of Casablanca).
The Canary Islands: "The Happy Isles"
Around 500 nautical miles, or about four to five days at sea, now separate us from the Canary Islands, which are also known as "the Happy Isles". In a world that seems to spin faster and faster, you will soon discover the ship to be a place of tranquillity, where you can leave the flood of information and the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind in the wake of the ship. In harmony with the wind and the sea, we encourage you to unwind and discover the power of taking it slow during everyday life on-board. This cruise guarantees and strives for rest and deep relaxation. You avoid personal burnout by sailing away from it.
Long periods of sailing on the wide blue ocean certainly make you hungry and hard-working sailors need good, hearty meals. You can look forward to the meals from our excellent galley, which consistently receives top marks in our customer satisfaction surveys. Be surprised by what you discover! And if, as sometimes happens, a fresh wind is blowing over the deck, simply make yourself comfortable below deck with a cup of tea in our comfortable lounge and browse through our comprehensive on-board library or DVD collection.
Tenerife: The "Island of Eternal Spring"
Our final destination is the harbour of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The largest of the Canary Islands is often called the "Island of Eternal Spring" because of its incomparable climate. . Its secret lies in its mix of diverse landscapes and cultures. The striking contrasts between young volcanic areas, mountain scenery, ancient laurel forests, beaches, and bizarre rock canyons become evident as we approach the island from the water. Spain's highest mountain the Pico del Teide reigns supreme over the island with its surrounding national park of the same name. But Tenerife also offers rich cultural aspects: the ramblas or boulevards in the bustling capital city, Santa Cruz, invite you to take a stroll, which can be easily combined with a trip to the tropical city park Garcia Sanabria. Just a few kilometres away is the town of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to a university and the episcopal see. If you want to spend a few more days on the island, great places to explore include the old wine merchant town of La Orotava, the coastal town of Puerto de la Cruz, the oldest dracaena tree in the world and the mountain regions of the Anaga and Teno Mountains.
