Isle of Man & Irish Sea – this voyage aboard the Eye of the Wind connects the Northern Irish capital, Belfast, with Dublin and takes you to the Isle of Man along the way. On board this traditional sailing ship, you’ll experience the coastline not from a distance, but right from the water: with the wind in our sails, the ever-changing light over the sea and the unique rhythm of life at sea.
The skipper plans the itinerary according to the wind and weather – so every trip becomes a sailing adventure in its own right. The planned stopover on the Isle of Man offers the chance to get to know the island better and enjoy a break from daily life on board. The Isle of Man captivates visitors with its varied landscape of rugged coastlines, rolling hills and green valleys, known as ‘glens’. What also makes the island special is its unique cultural heritage, with Celtic and Nordic influences, as well as traditional place names in the Manx language. When and on which course the ship covers the individual stages is decided en route, depending on the conditions at sea.
Anyone who wishes to can play an active part in sailing. Fellow passengers are welcome to help with the sailing manoeuvres and steer the ship themselves under supervision. It’s not about having any prior experience, but about experiencing the interplay between the ship, the crew and the wind at first hand. Even those who prefer to watch will find plenty to discover on deck: the crew at work, the interplay of the waves and the view of the coasts and islands of the Irish Sea.
Every day, the skipper shares useful information about sailing. The programme includes lessons on meteorology and navigation, as well as sail handling, the use of lines and various tacks. Questions are welcome, and much of what is covered can be put into practice straight away on board.
The itinerary allows for arrival in Dublin on Thursday evening (12 August) or Friday morning (13 August). This gives you a full day to explore the city’s sights without having to book an extra night’s accommodation.
