“Cast off!” for a five-day sailing trip, during which we plan to visit some of the most beautiful Baltic Sea harbours in Schleswig-Holstein. Lübeck-Travemünde is the starting point for this journey, which takes us through Lübeck Bay and the Fehmarn Belt to the Kiel Fjord. Depending on the weather conditions, stop-offs in southern Denmark or an overnight stay at an anchorage are also possible.
Travemünde combines Hanseatic charm with maritime history. The landmark of this Baltic Sea spa town is the Old Lighthouse, one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in Germany. From its viewing platform, there is a sweeping view across the River Trave, the harbour and Lübeck Bay. A popular meeting place is the Nordermole at the mouth of the Trave: here, you can watch ships entering and leaving the harbour up close.
Along the promenade, the front row of cafés, the beach terraces and the wide sandy beach invite you to take a stroll. The spectacle of ferries, freighters and cruise ships entering and leaving the mouth of the Trave is particularly impressive. The Priwall ferry also offers a short, charming crossing with a superb view of the maritime activity.
There are numerous sights along the Kiel Fjord: from the naval memorial in Laboe on the eastern shore to the imposing Friedrichsort lighthouse, Falckenstein beach and Kiel-Holtenau with its historic Tiessenkai quay, small cafés and old warehouses.
In Holtenau on the western shore of the Kiel Fjord, you can watch the varied comings and goings at the locks of the Kiel Canal. From small sports yachts to ocean giants, watercraft of all types and sizes pass by us here during the day on the world's busiest artificial waterway. Take a short walk to the small Holtenau lighthouse and soak up the nostalgic harbour atmosphere – old cargo sailing ships and schooners are often to be found here.
