Trip information

This short sailing trip is an excellent way to get a taste of traditional sailing! From our mooring in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck , we’ll sail down the River Trave and into Lübeck Bay. A port on the sunny island of Fehmarn or the Hanseatic city of Wismar is planned as a possible stopover and turning point. Even in the few days you spend on board, you’ll enjoy the comfort and the excellent cuisine, experience genuine traditional seafaring skills and discover how it feels to go ashore in the evening after a day at sea.

Lübeck

As a maritime museum, the Holstenhafen is home to numerous traditional sailing ships. The first port of call is the Holstentor (photo), which many people still recognise as the image on the back of the 50-DM banknotes. From this landmark, a small bridge leads into the ‘City of Seven Towers’.

In the 14^th century, Lübeck was regarded as the “Queen of the Hanse”. Even today, the city’s coat of arms still features the red and white shield of the Hanseatic League. It is well worth visiting the nearby European Hanseatic Museum. The multimedia exhibition explores trade, cultural history and seafaring across 600 years of the Hanseatic era. Housed in a former castle monastery, the museum, with an area of 4,000 square metres, is regarded as the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to the Hanseatic League.

Our tip: In the evening, you can take part in a guided night watchman’s walk through the historic city centre. Incidentally, a particular speciality has been produced here since the Hanseatic era – the world-famous Lübeck marzipan.

Travemünde

The historic four-masted barque Passat (photo) is moored right by the water, on the eastern bank of the Trave. This magnificent sailing ship is a reminder of the heyday of the windjammers; it is open to visitors and was built in the same year as our Eye of the Wind.

Travemünde combines Hanseatic charm with maritime history. The landmark of this Baltic Sea spa town is the Old Lighthouse, one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in Germany. From its viewing platform, there is a sweeping view across the River Trave, the harbour and Lübeck Bay. A popular meeting place is the Nordermole at the mouth of the Trave: here, you can watch ships entering and leaving the harbour up close.

Along the promenade, the front row of cafés, the beach terraces and the wide sandy beach invite you to take a stroll. The spectacle of ferries, freighters and cruise ships entering and leaving the mouth of the Trave is particularly impressive. The Priwall ferry also offers a short, charming crossing with a superb view of the maritime activity.

The times and ports mentioned are to be regarded as an illustrative and non-binding itinerary. The route described here may change at short notice depending on prevailing wind and weather conditions. The ship’s crew will decide on stopovers and the course of the voyage – wherever possible – whilst taking your preferences into account. This way, you will experience the cruise as a pleasant blend of adventure and comfort, of getting involved and simply enjoying yourself.
